The countdown has begun ; The Innovation Yachts Open60AAL is now in the water and ready to sail around the world unassisted through all five oceans, including the Arctic and the Southern Ocean!
After numerous optimizations and modifications, Innovation Yachts Open60AAL was officially launched on June 14, 2022. This 60-foot long boat was built in volcanic fiber, balsa wood and harmless epoxy. These materials are fully recyclable and environmentally friendly. As the departure date approaches, the Innovation Yachts team makes the final preparations such as fitting the sails, trimming the mast, etc. on this fully electric yacht.
In 60 days, skipper Norbert Sedlacek Koch will set sail on Innovation Yachts Open60AAL for the extreme single-handed, non-stop, unassisted sailing world record attempt.
Norbert will sail from Sables d’Olonne, France heading northwest to the west of the British Isles, then straight north, arriving on the archipelago of Svalbard. It will then go higher into the Arctic, skirting Svalbard east to west about 80 degrees N, the course will turn south passing west of Iceland, the Azores and the Cape Verde Islands eventually entering the Southern Ocean. The challenge will continue straight east, passing the longitude of the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, Tasmania, Stewart Island, all around Antarctica, and finally passing Cape Horn and then sailing north to Les Sables d’Olonne.
“The Ant Artic Lab project was launched to test the future concept of pointing, sustainable and fully recyclable yacht construction that respects our environment, the ultimate proof of quality, safety and functionality, and of course sets a new world record It will be a boost for all of us to see the performance and durability of this volcanic fiber boat where I believe it can withstand the harshest conditions, such as collisions with drifting ice.” said Norbert Sedlacek Koch, Skipper, Founder and Managing Director of Innovation Yachts.
This ultimate challenge will push Norbert to his limits as he will sail for six months in the face of loneliness and frustration over a distance of approximately 32,000 nautical miles. He is expected to encounter the most dangerous waters, through ice, stormy waters, doldrums and many more unknown adventures.
Save this date! The departure is scheduled for August 15, 2022 from Les Sables d’Olonne, the cradle of the only non-stop solo round the world race, the Vendée Globe. Come and meet us there at the start of the most extreme sailing world record attempt!
