An Arizona man died after chasing his girlfriend along a freeway, had her get his vehicle in the back several times, then sped off and hit another vehicle head-on.
The accident took place around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, the State Department of Public Safety said, according to KSAZ.
The boyfriend, who was driving a van, was pronounced dead at the scene, a DPS spokesperson said. The girlfriend was not injured when she got off the road, and the driver of the SUV that hit the van was seriously injured but is expected to survive.
“There was an altercation with his vehicle and his girlfriend’s vehicle, and they had contact,” said the DPS spokesperson. “We don’t know at this point if he intentionally went [the] the wrong way round, or if there was an accident, and he was struck by this third vehicle.
After making a U-turn, the truck, which was initially following the girlfriend westbound, began to roll east in the HOV lane before colliding with a Dodge Durango, investigators said.
The names of those involved were not disclosed.
