Australian Sailing celebrates Iain Murray –

Australian sailing legend Iain Murray AM has many accomplishments to his credit, but the man affectionately nicknamed “Big Fella” can now add leadership to an Olympic campaign that has won him two gold medals.

Murray completed his contract in his current role as Director of Australian Sailing – Tokyo 2020 Olympic Campaign, and in doing so, completes a significant contribution to a successful campaign in Japan.

Iain has played various roles throughout the Tokyo Olympic cycle. Most recently, he directly led the campaign and a supporting role for the men’s 470 gold medalist team of Mat Belcher and Will Ryan.

“I loved working with this group of athletes,” Murray said today.

“Being able to join Enoshima after all the delays and obstacles to complete the job the way we did is something that will stay with me forever. The team has truly come together over the past year, which has only been made stronger by the restrictions placed on us by the pandemic. Seeing the team succeed in Japan alongside the next generation of Mat Belcher, Matt Wearns and Lisa Darmanins was really a nice note to finish.

One of Australia’s most accomplished sailors himself, Murray has had an expansive sailing career and remains passionately engaged not only in his own pursuits, but in the development of others as well.

Starting off as High Performance Director in 2017, Murray was expected to finish after the 2020 Olympics and then make his way to America’s Cup 36 in his role as Regatta Director. With the one-year delay of the Olympics, a new plan was agreed to allow him to manage his role in the America’s Cup in March 2021 and the Olympics postponed to July.

Murray’s legacy with the Australian Sailing Team may not end with the successes of Tokyo as he reflects on his future and the advisory or support role he could play in the years to come. He will also continue to balance a number of different projects inside and outside the sport.

A true legend in the sport, Murray will not rest as he continues his work as Regatta Director of SailGP, Director of Murlan Marinas and other commercial and nautical interests.

Australian Sailing would like to recognize Murray’s significant contribution to the team’s successful Tokyo 2020 campaign.
