Football: Sailors sink Albirex 4-1 to start winning Women’s Premier League

SINGAPORE – Lion City Sailors started their Women’s Premier League campaign in style on Sunday June 4, beating Albirex Niigata 4-1 at Yishun Stadium.

Midfielder Nur Izzati Rosni scored twice, while Dorcas Chu and Madison Telmer also netted a goal each.

The Sailors, who were exempted in the league’s first round last weekend, had the bulk of the early chances but struggled to find the opener. Albirex’s high defensive line caused them problems and they saw several of their forays ruled offside.

It wasn’t until the 45th minute that their relentless attack was rewarded.

As Albirex goalkeeper Maisarah Ramat went for a routine cross, she ran into Nur defender Emilia Natasha and the ball was knocked into Chu’s path, who sent it back to an oncoming Izzati for open accounts.

The Sailors doubled their lead just three minutes into the second half after a cross from striker Sara Merican fell on an unmarked Chu who slid the ball into the near post.

Just 15 minutes later, a free-kick cross from Sailors defender Nur Umairah was knocked down by Maisarah and headed in by 17-year-old Canadian Madison Telmer.

In the 76th minute, an Albirex free-kick found the run at the back post from Nadhra Aqilah, who headed the ball into the net to clear one.

With four minutes remaining, Izzati doubled after Maisarah knocked the ball down in front of goal again.

In the previous kick-off, Tanjong Pagar United beat Balestier Khalsa 5-0 to overtake Still Aerion at the top of the table while Tiong Bahru beat Hougang United 4-1 at St Wilfred Field.
