As Long Island and New England brace for the first hurricane to make landfall in three decades, the Outer Banks will continue to experience surf and tear currents on Sunday as Henry pulls away.

All of North Carolina’s beaches have experienced frequent, powerful rip currents and violent shore breaks. No swim flag was in place on Saturday and will likely be displayed again on Sunday.

Surf heights of 6 to 10 feet are expected to continue this evening. However, no overflow has been reported along the Outer Banks.

After circling Bermuda all this week, Henri finally turned north on Friday. The center remained about 200 miles from our shores on Saturday as it became a hurricane.

While conditions on the Outer Banks may not be conducive to ocean immersion for swimmers and less skilled surfers and bodyboarders, this is good news for experienced surfers up and down the East Coast.

Jody from beach 104 in the morning spoke with REAL Watersports surf instructor Jeff Carver aka The Phantom Surfer on Friday about the conditions expected this weekend.

The eighth tropical cyclone and third hurricane of the season is now expected to make landfall along Long Island on Sunday, then move into New England in the form of a strong tropical storm.

The last hurricane to make landfall in this part of the country was Hurricane Bob exactly 30 years ago this week.

On Friday, a weather system unrelated to Henry brought heavy rain and even a few downpours in the Outer Banks and northeastern North Carolina.

A few showers and storms produced heavy rainfall in isolated areas on Saturday, with more expected for the next two days.
