High Surf, sun expected in Santa Monica this weekend

SANTA MONICA, CA – Mostly sunny skies are expected this weekend after a clear wet morning in Los Angeles County on Friday.

Rain fell across much of the region from Thursday evening through early Friday morning, lingering in driving times in some areas.

Some locations, mostly in the eastern part of the county, saw gusty rain later as the storm system moved out of the area. But while much of the rain continued, National Weather Service forecasters said cooler, windier conditions would persist throughout the day. The NWS noted that “the main theme today will be wind.”

A high surf advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. Saturday; a wind advisory was issued until 8 p.m. Friday.

Overnight rain was mostly light, although the NWS issued a flood advisory for parts of Los Angeles County, including the San Gabriel Valley and coastal areas, which expired before dawn.

In Orange County, Bee Canyon recorded 0.39 inches of rain as of 5 a.m. Lower Silverado Canyon reported 0.39 inches and Lake Forest reported 0.36 inches, according to the NWS.

But the sun was again shining over most of the area by mid- to late-morning. And forecasters said conditions would warm significantly over the weekend.

“A warming and drying trend will develop over the weekend,” according to the NWS. “The warming trend will become more prominent on Sunday and Monday as light offshore flows develop below the upper ridge.”

Forecasters said the change will bring “summer weather” to Southern California, thanks to Santa Ana winds. Conditions could become warm enough to topple some heat records by Monday, according to the NWS.
