Introducing the Kawau Sailing Weekend! • Live sail matrix

Many New Zealand sailors are familiar with the island of Kawau. The tropical getaway is about as close to Auckland as you can get without knowing it. It’s the perfect delivery stop, a quick weekend getaway, and the finish line of our favorite races.

Keeping the options open to everyone on work weekends, Kawau Boating Club (KBC) captain Jon Whisker was inspired and created the idea to emulate the iconic Hamilton Island Race Week right here at home. This year will be the inaugural Kawau Sailing Weekend.

KBC has all the ingredients and infrastructure for a regatta of this magnitude in the hopes of making the event a signature of the New Zealand summer sailing calendar.

It is a fantastic alternative for smaller family crewed yachts or looking for a distance race not too far. The opening weekend at KBC is Labor Weekend – there will be fuel available 24/7, laundry, water and showers. The famous Bistro will be open all weekend!

Kawau Sailing Weekend will follow a structure designed for racers and cruisers. There will be a lot of socializing on the island, including family events. This is to ensure that everyone can participate in the Sailing Weekend both on and off the water – even the kids!

It will go something like this:

Getting There – It will start with the Auckland to Kawau race starting at 1:00 p.m. on Friday October 22 at RNZYS. Only two divisions – racing and cruising. Find entry and NOR online.

Saturday morning – Relaxing family day = excursions! To recover from the race, take a scenic 40-minute walk in the Matakana River Raid that winds down the mangrove path following where the kauri barges plied. It is safe from all weather!

If that’s not enough, the travel bonus? Upon arrival, everyone will have time to stroll through the markets of Matakana before returning home with the tide.

Saturday night – What would a trip to Kawau Island be without putting your boogie on live music? The Ladies Slayers, a group of New Zealand girls, are ready to help you find your rhythm. Of course, there may be some restrictions that we must adhere to. If so, they will play from a barge in the harbor. We will bring you the luxury of a live band!

Sunday morning – Get your body moving before the race with yoga, volleyball, bush walks and wellness cocktails (BYO Rum!). Parohe, the astonishing well-being retreat at the head of Bon Accord, opens its doors to the sailors of Race Weekend! Rest and compete on the court before you take to the water.

Sunday afternoon – The race around the islands. From 1:00 p.m. there will be a race to and from the KBC platform. Following the relaxed atmosphere of the weekend, no demonstrations allowed!

Sunday night – It’s a wrap! Prize giving to KBC around 1700 (ish). The KBC Cups will be awarded to line honors in both races and first on PHRF. The Cruise division will be awarded by the club captain.

But, not only is the race rewarded – there will be cash prizes for demeanor, best dressed and more! So keep the Corinthian attitude and wardrobes in place all weekend long, just in case you weren’t going already!

On Monday – Take a leisurely cruise at your own pace after a busy weekend!

The weekend is sponsored by RNZYS, Mount Gay, Orams, Nautica Shipping, Parhoe – dinner for 6 at your place with their Michelin star chef, Trelise Cooper – women’s fashion, Triumph and Disaster – cosmetics and Culley’s Fine Foods.

We can’t wait to share with you this vision of a great race weekend getaway! Find the entry and NOR here.

Please contact Jon Whisker at [email protected] for any questions or concerns and we look forward to seeing you this Labor Weekend!
