Culburra Beach’s Owen Wright will begin his assault on the newly introduced World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series in France next month, as he begins his requalification process for next year’s Champions Tour (CT). The complete overhaul of the professional surf ladder in 2021 now offers a clear path for athletes to climb the Qualifying Series ranks and ultimately join the best in the world, or as in Wright’s case, requalify for the prestigious TC. The Challenger series, although condensed into four events (US Open, Portugal, France, Hawaii) due to COVID in 2021, will feature eight stages, combined male and female events with equal prices starting next year. Wright, who won a bronze medal in Tokyo, is one of the many greats who will compete in the Landes, among them the French Michael Bourez and Johanne Defay, the American Caroline Marks, the Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb, the Japanese Kanoa Igarashi, the Portuguese Frederico Morais. and the Italian Leonardo Fioravanti. The pressure to perform in France is high as it will determine who qualifies for the final event of the Challenger Series in Hawaii – which is expected to feature 80 men and 40 women.
