SAILING: Port Angeles Sea Scouts qualify for Boston race

PORT ANGELES — Sea Scout sailors from Port Angeles, Seattle, Port Orchard and Portland have come together to compete on Port Angeles harbor waters.

The occasion was the first Kelly Cup regatta hosted by the Sea Scout Ship Marvin Shields and the Port Angeles Yacht Club. During the event, experienced sailors and beginners were able to get into the water for a day of regattas in small sailboats.

“I really enjoyed seeing some of the new Sea Scouts learning to sail and getting out on the water for the first time,” said Jared Minard, skipper of the SSS Marvin Shields.

Ozzy Minard and Ella Schultz, members of the Port Angeles High School sailing team, took top honors with a first-place finish on the water.

“It was pretty good to be able to apply the skills we learned on the high school sailing team,” Schultz said. It was a good competition and this victory feels good.”

Since the Kelly Cup is a regional qualifier for the National Koch Cup competition, Minard and Schultz also had the opportunity to compete in the 2022 Koch Cup this summer in Boston.

Sea Scouts is a co-ed program for youth ages 14-21.

The SSS Marvin Shields Group meets weekly on Wednesdays at the Port Angeles Yacht Club, 1305 Marine Drive, at 6:30 p.m.
