Former Kingscliff surf and local champion Chelsea Hedges has successfully received Sport Australia’s 2021 Women Leaders in Sport (WLIS) program.

Chelsea is one of 160 participants who took the six-week course which aims to support and empower women in the sports workforce.

“The course really went well and there was a good amount of information,” Chelsea said. “It was also a good thing to connect with other women coaches and hear their challenges, and discuss the different options and ways to overcome obstacles.”

Chelsea was chosen for their impressive professional history – representing Australia at the World Championship Tour of Surfing for 10 years and holding the world title in 2005.

She is now looking to pass her skills and knowledge to the next generation through coaching, which she does as part of Surfing Australia’s talent identification journey, based in Casuarina.

“I am still passionate about surfing,” said the former champion. “It’s good to be able to give back to surfing and share some of the experience of being on tour.”

“Surfing is about to be in the Olympics for the very first time, so it’s very exciting, to be a coach and to be a part of the Olympics would be amazing.”
