Best family ski resort for: a quiet village
Vaujany is perched on a sunny plateau in Isère. It combines all the charm of a traditional farming village with modern facilities and allows you to quickly reach the heart of the 250 km ski area of Alpe d’Huez. This makes the resort a great choice for keen skiers, but there is also a family area in Arpette, where the ski school is based, as well as a long children’s run and ski lifts. The best time to come is Easter – when the weather is generally mild but the snow is still reliable. Stay in an independent chalet with the specialist tour operator, Ski summit.
3. Gurgl, Austria
Best family ski resort for: playing at altitude
Gurgl – the new name for Obergurgl and its neighbor Hochgurgl – is one of the snowiest ski areas in the Alps. The pretty Tyrolean resort – where I learned to ski as a child – is home to 112km of slopes and 25 ski lifts, with free ski buses to and from the slopes. The ski schools have excellent lessons and the BOBO Ski Club runs morning and afternoon lessons for children aged three to four. There is no resort-run crèche, but a handful of hotels offer babysitting service, like the all-inclusive Lohmann Hotel which offers children free pickup and delivery service for ski school, babysitting, lunch and equipment rental.
