Why Turia Pitt encourages women to run

Turia Pitt is an engineer, author, speaker and survivor with an incredible story of resilience and perseverance.

She has also long been interested in healthy, active living with huge and meaningful goals. She completed a full Ironman in Hawaii in 2016, just five years after suffering fatal burns in 2011 and having to rebuild every aspect of her life, including relearning to walk.

Now, Turia is encouraging other women to run, through a ten-week RUN with Turia program for mothers to help them start running and / or run further and faster.

Having recently shared her story on our podcast, The Leadership Lessons, we asked Pitt to answer our health Q&A so we could learn more about how she manages her health and wellness between two children, runs a business and its writing and speaking activities.

In the morning I…

Make a coffee, now! And then while the kids are playing, I’m going to take 60 seconds while drinking my coffee to think of three things I’m grateful for. It sounds trite (I know! It’s true!) But it changes my perspective and sets me up for a good day.

My exercise routine includes …

Functioning. Obviously that’s good from a fitness standpoint, but honestly it’s the 20 or 30 minutes I have to be alone, my feet pounding under me, the fresh air on my face, no one speaks to me (mom’s life!) which is worth it. I love and need this little window of time to be myself and work on something just for me. It’s so simple, but it’s a bit magical.

My favorite workout is …

If I don’t run, I surf. And if I don’t do either, and there’s no global pandemic, I’m in a ZUU class!

I find the balance in …

Uhhhhh, when you find it, will you let me know ?! I’m kidding ! Honestly, I try to keep it simple and focus on just one thing each day for myself. Whether it’s a quick run, a surf, or a glass of wine with a buddy, taking that little time for myself puts my life in control. When I take that time, I come back happier, in a better mood, ready to show up to endless Zoom meetings, birthdays and bath times.

On health, I encourage women to …

Take a moment for yourself! And be comfortable with saying “no! ” more often. And of course, I encourage them to check out my online running program RUN with Turia! The next round will start on October 4th and we have 5K, 10K and 21K programs. For 10 weeks, we’ll give you everything you need to reach your distance goal, and best of all, we’re all doing it together as one cohort.

Friendships have been made and I’m not afraid to tell you that our Facebook community is the most positive place on the internet! So much support, encouragement, vulnerability and bad ass women fighting for themselves! It’s the best!
